Religion in America

The Pew Research Center just released its annual report on religion in America. Let's just say that the mythic-authoritarian meme is alive and well in this Christian nation (two-thirds hold this view).

Among the highlights:
* 83% of Americans believe in God.
* 76% believe God created the heavens and the earth.
* 51% of Americans believe in evolution, but only 26% believe in natural selection.
* 79% believe that Earth is getting warmer, but only 50% believe it is human-caused.
* 78% still believe the Bible is the word of God, but only 35% believe it is the literal word of God.
* 79% of Christians believe Jesus will return, but only 20% believe He will return in their lifetime.
* 69% believe liberals have gone too far in keeping religion out of government.
* 49% believe conservative Christians have gone too far in imposing their religious beliefs on government.
* 44% have a favorable view of the conservative Christian movement.
