Poem a Day, April 2

April 2, 2009

ocotillo blossoms offer orange relief
amid infinite shades of pale green

so little color in the Sonoran Desert,
some lupine, a cardinal, both seem out
of place here, stranded and foreign

but ravens, yes, and phaenopepla, yes,
their black feathers defy the sun
seemingly always present

these birds know the landscape,
know the crevices of shadow
between saguaro and prickly pear

and now the Paloverde, their yellow
flowers filling the air with scent

so much subtlety and so little brassiness,
the desert needs its brief reminder
that contrast offers us a way in
